Masters for Download – High Res & Standard
As well as the standard revenue/income streams that exist, the High Resolution Audio market has become less niche and more mainstream over the past few years.
This increase in marketshare parallels the advent of higher internet bandwidth and the ability to playback a range of Sample Rates and Bit Depths across an even bigger range of devices. This coupled with larger catalogues being sold by online retailers like HD Tracks, High Res Audio etc., it is even more important to retain copies of your Masters at High Resolution (24bit at Mastered Sample Rate) with the aim of future proofing your music for release at a Higher Resolution – Online or via DVD or Blu-ray.
Of course, there is also Apple and iTunes to think about too. Through their ‘Mastered For iTunes’ campaign Apple have enabled a way of dipping a toe in the world of ‘better quality audio’ (well, variable bit-rate MP3) as well as amassing a large archive of High Resolution Audio. They already have infrastructure in place to sell vast quantities audio via the iTunes shop (and Apple Music) and they have the databasing ability to control their library too. All they have to do is throw the switch from MP3 to High Res WAV’s.
So, it’s worth getting your music out there in High Resolution and offering another income stream for you and better quality audio for your fans.
